Environment/Sustainability Initiatives

The Sturt Mall is a Green Mall.

At the Sturt Mall we are investing in our environment by making our shopping Centre a greener place to shop. We are recognised as leading the Wagga Wagga business community in the introduction and promotion of environmental sustainability

In the past twelve months we have:

  • Achieved a 5 star NABERS Energy rating for the Sturt Mall
  • Achieved a 4 star NABERS Water rating for the Sturt Mall.

A NABERS rating is based on 12 months of operational energy use.  More stars indicate better energy performance and lower emissions of greenhouse gases (5 Star max).  NABERS is a National initiative of the Commonwealth, State and Territory Governments.  It is managed by the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water NSW.

  • introduced 100% green power for all common area lighting and air conditioning
  • installed solar powered hot water for our toilets and parents room
  • offset carbon emissions from the Centre and removed over 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the air by planting over 500 trees around Wagga with CO2 Australia Ltd
  • increased our energy efficiency through the installation of a power correction factor unit
  • expanded our recycling program to include paper, cardboard, PET bottles, glass and cans and are currently installing custom made waste and recycling bins
  • we recycle approximately 2,500 cubic metres of cardboard annually
  • Installed additional bike racks to encourage the use of bikes
  • planted drought resistant gardens and we regularly add mulch to conserve water
  • our bathroom amenities are being upgraded to include water usage reducing devices
  • introduced environmentally friendly cleaning chemicals and consumables across the Centre
  • we are conducting an energy audit across the Centre to identify further improvements
  • encouraged the use of recycled materials in shop fitouts
  • we are providing space for community groups to promote environmental programs
  • we are providing free Environmental shopping bags
  • we have added sensors and timers to our lights to reduce energy consumption
